The Dollar City Foundation has officially launched a bold education intervention aimed at reversing a worrying decline in academic performance within the Achiase District.
At the heart of this initiative is the BECE 6-Ones Scholarship Scheme, a targeted program designed to reward excellence, motivate students, and rebuild a culture of academic achievement at the basic education level.
A Disturbing Academic Reality
For several years, the Achiase District has struggled with declining outcomes in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).
Alarmingly, since 2019, no student from the district has attained the highest possible result, six ones (aggregate 6).
This trend has raised deep concern among educators, parents, and community leaders, as BECE performance plays a critical role in determining access to quality senior high school education and future opportunities.
A Strategic Response to the Crisis
In response, the Founder and Board Chair of Dollar City Foundation, Mr. Eric Amoah (popularly known as Dollar Man), announced the launch of the BECE 6-Ones Scholarship during the Dollar City Maths Quiz 2025.
The scholarship guarantees financial and academic support for any student in the district who achieves six ones in the BECE, enabling them to transition confidently into senior high school without financial barriers.
“This initiative is not just about scholarships,” Mr. Amoah noted.
“It is about restoring belief, belief in excellence, belief in discipline, and belief that our children can compete at the highest level.”
Beyond Scholarships: A Holistic Education Strategy
The BECE 6-Ones Scholarship is part of the broader Dollar City Foundation Educational Initiative, which addresses learning gaps across the education pipeline.
Key components include:
- Dollar City Maths & STEM Quiz for primary school pupils to strengthen numeracy and early problem-solving skills
- Dollar City Spelling Bee for junior high school students to improve literacy, confidence, and academic discipline
- External examiners and exam preparation support for senior high school students
- Teaching and learning materials for schools
- Mentorship and academic guidance for high-performing and struggling students alike
Together, these interventions are designed to move students from basic competence to academic excellence.
Strengthening Teachers and Learning Environments
Recognizing that student success depends heavily on teacher quality and learning conditions, the initiative also includes:
- Teacher refresher courses and incentive packages
- A Free Wi-Fi Learning Hub to support research, digital learning, and access to online educational resources for students and teachers
These measures ensure that excellence is not demanded from students alone, but supported at every level of the education system.
